The training of horses to control directly, instead of restraining the neck?
I have a 7 year mare, who has mastered neck. I can not stop the neck. I learned with the English tack and prefer dressage and jumping western riding my mare is used. I like having both hands on the reins and tied at the top so if you drop them in stock, they do not end with the horse's feet. How can I teach him to control line (held in both hands of the rider, turning the horse's head by the clamp on the side the desired turn) so that each of us feel at ease when we ride a horse? (Especially when I want to start the competition in local dressage competitions again.)
Not all horses are launched with direct reining. Most are, but you can train a horse to bridle at neck since the beginning. It all goes back to work on the ground. Just simple things like turning, and ground support to help a bit and the reins and control a direct method. In the saddle, you have almost the same things you do to get the horse to learn how to control neck, just another order reverse. Ask the landmark first direct, if it does not work, ask the reference line and then apply the indirect reference. So if you want to go left, put pressure on the left rein. If they do not go immediately to the left, put pressure on the left rein, then put the right rein against the neck up as a reinforcement what you want. With practice, you can use index building less and get exactly the direct reins. Do not underestimate the importance of your leg cues. Leg indices are universal regardless of direct or indirect signals of the flange.
